How laser tattoo removal works

In the previous years we had painful methods like dermabrasion (scraping off the top layer of skin), cryosurgery (freezing the skin then peeling away layers of the tattoo) or excision (cutting the tattoo out). However, the Q-switched process is completely non-abrasive and doesn't cause any scarring on the patient's skin.

Despite the known permanence of tattooing many people make decisions to ‘get ink’ without fully appreciating the issues and the permanence of tattoos. Their life style circumstances or appreciation of their tattoo changes and they want the ink removed.

The Q-Switch Laser uses PhotoAcoustic energy to penetrate the skin and safely target the tattoo at its core. Each pass of the laser causes the tattoo ink to vibrate and gently shatter into micro-particles that are eventually eliminated through natural body processes.

Complete removal or significant fading of the tattoo colour can be achieved without scarring in over 95% of cases.

Does it Hurt?

Our clients tell us that the experience feels much like the tattooing a brief moment of mild dull pain like a pinch followed by a feeling of warmth in the treated areas. We do offer anaesthetic gel and depending on your tolerance, you may or may not need to use this.

How long will it take?

It takes longer to remove a tattoo than it took to have the tattoo applied. , our experience is that it takes from 4 to sometimes 12 sessions 10 weeks apart. This all depends on the number of colours used in your tattoo, the size of the design the type of ink used and the age of tattoo.

Larger tattoos may take more sessions to achieve removal. Smaller tattoos and especially Black tattoos are easier to remove than larger multi-coloured designs. After several treatments, you will notice a temporary whitening of the area that has been treated. Over time, the tattoo fades and the skin returns to your normal colour.

A simple home-made black tattoo may only require 4-6 treatments to remove, whereas a professional tattoo may need 6-12 or more treatments. As with all Laser therapy treatments, the frequency and number of treatments will depend on your skin type, the area affected and the size of that area. This laser procedure has a proven record to be safe and effective. The top researchers have determined the wavelengths of light which have to be used in the process that are most effective at removing ink without damaging surrounding skin.
